Everyone wants their website to appear the #1 spot on Google for their chosen keyword. People think that as soon as they achieve the #1 position, orders start coming in faster and they are in the money. The good news is it can be done and the key to success is, get links for your site.

There are many other factors that are taken into account to get your site to #1 position. But getting links back to your site is by far the most powerful way of getting to get a top position in Google. It’s also worth noting that it is not just enough to have links pointing to your site, but you need to have your keyword selection as the "anchor text" to your site. Anchor text is the words you use as the clickable text for your link.

For example instead of simply saying "Click Here", you should use "Product Name" as the link text. So how can you determine what the best keyword phrase is for your site? Be careful not to optimise your site for a one word phrase and risk losing out on other areas of your business. If you company sells cars and car parts you wouldn’t just use "ACME Cars" as your phrase as this might eliminate customers who are looking for car set covers. A better choice would be "ACME Cars & Accessories".

Before optimising your website you should research and see what are the most relevant and searched for terms and focus on more targeted keyword phrases. Another important factor to take into consideration is the content of the page the links leads to. If a potential client clicks a link "ACME Cars & Accessories" and is taken to a page that has nothing about cars or accessories in it chances are they are going to go elsewhere. Also Google would see this as irrelevant content and your site may be penalised as a result.

Once you’ve done your research and have compiled your list of relevant keyword phrases, you need to see which one gets the most searches. I have found the best tool for this is WordTracker, and it is worth the small fee, a free trial is available, or for a few extra well spent dollars try SEO Spyglass with it’s accompanying Link Assistant software. You can try these tools for free before committing to purchase.

The next step is to then begin a link building campaign where Link Assistant really comes in handy. The best way to build links is to not only start a reciprocal link exchange, but also begin a strategic link building campaign.

Strategic link building is when you get a link to your site without having to reciprocate. The best way to do this is to write articles of relevance about your service or business and submit it to hundreds of article sites. Artcle Submitter or Article Post Robot can save you hours when submitting articles to hundreds of sites and well worth the small investment. Bloggers and other article sites then take a copy of your article and host them on their sites with your back link included!

Patience is a virtue, although you should expect to see a change in results on Google in as little as a week, in can take up to 4-5 months before you notice a change.

Another handy tool if you use the Firefox browser is the Alexa Sparky add on which gives you the Alexa Traffic Rank for your site allowing you to keep an eye on your sites position as it climbs throw the rankings. There many other factors that will enhance your rankings in Google, such as title tags, image names etc. but an effective link building campaign is by far the best method to get your site noticed on Google.
